A. The University is moving to a single sign-on service using Microsoft Authentication in efforts to continue improving information security on campus and protecting our community. This will change how you log into your new ArcGIS Online and Pro account.
In addition to the SSO change, the University is updating the “short name” of our ArcGIS Online Organization from “dlm.maps.arcgis.com” to “UNReno.maps.arcgis.com” on Aug, 9th. Anyone who has publicly published or shared any web maps or apps, such as StoryMaps, Surveys, data, content, maps, etc., will need to update all their content (or change ownership) and update the URL and links to their content immediately.
Please read the following FAQs to help guide you through this process. If you have any additional questions, please contact your administrator or OIT for support.
A. You must have an ArcGIS Online account to use ArcGIS Pro and applications.
ArcGIS Online is a collaborative web GIS platform that allows you to use, create, and share maps, scenes, apps, layers, analytics, and data. You get access to content such as ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World, ArcGIS apps, and cloud infrastructure, where you can add items, publish web layers, and create maps, apps, and scenes. ArcGIS Online can be used as an integral part of the ArcGIS system, extending the access and capabilities of ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS APIs, and ArcGIS Maps SDKs.
ArcGIS Pro is a GIS software application that is installed locally on computers or servers and is the most popular for GIS users. It is similar to the previous program ArcMap, which is now deprecated, but ArcGIS Pro has a new application that keeps the same functionality while incorporating the most modern technology. With ArcGIS Pro, you can explore, visualize, and analyze data locally, using your own memory and disc space, to create 2D maps and 3D scenes; and share your work to ArcGIS Online or your ArcGIS Organization (Enterprise) portal.
A. Faculty, staff, and students at the University of Nevada, Reno, and its affiliates may use Esri’s ArcGIS products. ESRI has provided a rubric for determining permitted uses under the education site license.
A. ESRI has provided a list of software and applications under our institutional site license.
Steps: (Document instructions)
A. No, you can continue to use your current non-SSO account and do not need to switch. However, it is highly recommended that you switch to the new SSO account. The only reason to keep your old account is because you are an administrator. If you choose to continue with your non-SSO account, you will continue to log in as usual with your username and password, NOT "Your ArcGIS organization's URL" (SSO login).
Q. How do I log into my old non-SSO account?
Steps: (Document instructions)
A. First, you will need to create your new account via the “create a new SSO account” as described above. Then, log in with your new SSO account credentials from now on. If you do not have any data or content to transfer, then you do not need to do anything else. If you do own content and data, you will need to manually transfer all of it from your previous non-SSO account to your new SSO account, as shown in the next question.
A. Within your old non-SSO account, you must manually transfer ownership of all your content (data, maps, apps, etc.) to your new SSO account username. See this manual about transferring ArcGIS Online content between members (or yourself) in an organization.
A. Our URL short name will change from “dlm.maps.arcgis.com” to “UNReno.maps.arcgis.com” on Aug 9th. You must sign into your account and update any bookmarks pointing to our old organization URL immediately. You must also manually update the URLs of your hosted content and resources, including Storymaps and web apps. For example, you can update the URL of your hosted web apps through the Settings tab of the item page. In addition, if your organization has existing distributed collaborations, you must remove and re-create them, invite ArcGIS Enterprise participants to the newly created collaborations, and reestablish trust.
A. Unfortunately, Esri does not allow non-administrators to update their own email. Administrators are the only ones who can manually change your non-SSO account email. Please contact your local administrator or contact OIT to request an email update.
A. ArcGIS Pro is installed on the Data & GIS Depot Lab computers in the DeLaMare Science & Engineering Library and on Virtual Remote Desktops—SilverWolf.
SilverWolf is a remote desktop environment available to students, staff, and faculty who are doing more resource intensive work on a remote connection. For instance is you are computing large data sets for academic purposes, SilverWolf can grant you a more dedicated system that will allow the data processing to proceed more smoothly and reduce strain on BlueWolf for the rest of Campus.
To access SilverWolf, visit the Access a Virtual Desktop Collection – Request Service to submit your ticket to TeamDynamix or call the OIT helpdesk at (775) 682-5000.
A. Yes. To download and run ArcGIS Pro, check if your computer has the correct system and hardware requirements. This software is for Windows operating systems only. Then, create your ArcGIS Online account via SSO, as described earlier. Each organization account is assigned 1 ArcGIS Pro license. Once signed in to ArcGIS Online, you can download ArcGIS Pro (Not from MyEsri). Download ArcGIS Pro from ArcGIS Online.
A. No. ArcGIS Pro is not iOS friendly. You must have a Windows Virtual Machine installed on your computer and download it, or you can access ArcGIS Pro through the Virtual Remote Desktops (Silverwolf or Bluewolf). UNR does not provide virtual machine software.
A: Each ArcGIS Online account is granted 2,000 credits. For a list of services requiring credit usage, please visit the Service Credits Overview page to see how many service credits are consumed by different types of ArcGIS operations. To manage your credit consumption most effectively, it is recommended that you estimate the number of credits that will be used to complete geocoding, map tile caching, and other operations that can quickly consume credits prior to running these processes.
A. First, create your ArcGIS Online account as described earlier. Then, we recommend completing this ArcGIS tutorial – Migrate from ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro which guides you through the process.
A. Please contact your local ArcGIS Administrator or place an OIT General Support ticket with what you need. OIT – Submit a ticket to request via TeamDynamix or call the OIT helpdesk at (775) 682-5000.
A. Your account will be deactivated Dec 2024, since you are no longer a student, faculty, or staff.
Once your UNR ArcGIS account becomes inactive, you will:
Please download your content and data, or transfer to someone else in the organization before you lose access (e.g., an instructor, project manager, Principal Investigator (PI), or administrator upon request). Plan accordingly. Transferring ArcGIS Online content between members (or yourself) in an organization.
