Linguist, author of English rhetoric and language books; first-time novelist – a Shakespearean mystery, published in 2000

University of Nevada, Reno professor of English emeritus; 35-year career at University of Nevada, Reno, 1945-1980; duties include chairman of the Department of English, dean of Arts and Science and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Early in career, Fulbright lecturer at universities of Sydney and Helsinki.

Columnist: 1982-1995, weekly column on English usage in the Reno Gazette-Journal.

Honors include National Council of Teachers of English Distinguished Lecturer; Nevada Humanities Committee Distinguished Scholar and Humanist; University of Nevada Distinguished Faculty Award.

Born in Bremen, Indiana; Reno resident since 1945. Graduate of Cornell University, BA, Ph.D.
