What is a Community Borrower?

A community borrower is someone at least 18 years old who is not a student or a member of faculty or staff of the Nevada System of Higher Education. Community borrower cards are $25/per year for Nevada residents and $50/per year for out of state residents. Alumni and affiliates of the University, as well as library donors, may receive a community borrower card free of charge. 

Applying for a Community Borrowers Card

To apply for a Community Borrowers Card go to any Library Services desk at any of the University Libraries. A valid photo idea must be shown to receive a card. A University of Nevada Community Borrowers Card will be issued at the time of request or once all necessary information is provided.

Community Borrowers Cards may be obtained at the Library Services desk. A valid photo id must be shown to receive a card and an application must be filled out.

The card will be issued the day the application is turned in and the fee is paid.

How To Renew A Community Borrowers Card

To renew a Community Borrowers Card you must come into on of our Libraries and fill out the application again and pay the yearly fee. The application needs to be filled out again to be sure that all your contact information is the same.

An email will be sent before your account expires. Accounts will expire a year after they were issued.

General Borrowing Rules

Patrons with Community Borrowers Cards can check out twenty (20) books for a period of four (4) weeks. Books can be renewed online with the patrons last name and Community Borrowers Card bar code number.

Borrowing From Other Institutions

Community borrowers can use our Link+ lending system and make Interlibrary Loan requests. There is no charge for Link + borrowing and those requests can be made online. Inter Library Loan requests for community borrowers must be made through the Library Services desk. There is a $10 charge for Inter Library Loan requests for community borrowers and should be paid at receipt of book.

Holds on Records & Suspension of Privileges

Your borrowing privileges are suspended when you have accrued charges of $20.00 or more.

Fines for course reserves must be fully paid prior to checking out additional reserve items. 

A "hold" will be placed on your student record when charges exceeding $40 are accrued in the library.

A "hold" on you record will prevent you from ordering transcripts and registering for classes. Holds will only be removed once the fines are paid in full. 

You will be sent to collection for fines of $65 or greater, 20 days after the item due date. Your borrowing privileges will be blocked and a hold will be placed on your record.
